The Mainframe DevOps Engineer will play a key role in modernizing and automating mainframe software build and deployment processes. This position combines technical expertise with process improvement, ensuring robust CI/CD pipelines while supporting mainframe operations. You will work in a dynamic environment, collaborating across teams to design, code, troubleshoot, and optimize lifecycle processes. The role emphasizes independent judgment, hands-on development, and the ability to translate business needs into automated solutions. You will contribute to maintaining documentation, supporting audits, and delivering high-quality solutions that increase efficiency and reliability in mainframe environments. This role offers both remote flexibility and the opportunity to drive meaningful modernization initiatives.
Accountabilities
- Design, develop, and maintain mainframe build and deployment processes.
- Modernize software lifecycle processes and implement DevOps/CI/CD methodologies.
- Provide Tier 2 and 3 on-call support for mainframe build and deployment operations.
- Administer software lifecycle tools such as ChangeMan ZMF and related client packs.
- Identify process inefficiencies and recommend improvements to optimize workflow.
- Document processes, maintain mainframe-related documentation, and support audits.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment with architectural requirements.
Requirements
- Experience managing z/OS and USS mainframe systems with understanding of mainframe architecture.
- Strong background in mainframe software lifecycle management and DevOps implementation.
- Proficiency with version control, change management, and deployment tools (e.g., ChangeMan ZMF).
- Knowledge of CICS, Db2, SQL, SDSF, IBM High Level Assembler, IBM Enterprise COBOL, REXX, JCL, and ISPF Dialog.
- Experience in developing, building, and troubleshooting mainframe software.
- Ability to analyze processes and identify opportunities for automation and optimization.
- Strong problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills.
- Preferred: Experience with Agile methodology, IBM Dependency Based Build (DBB), IBM UrbanCode Deploy (UCD), Eclipse-based IDEs, RocketGit, quality control, and test automation.
