Experienced Special Education Teaching Assistant – High School Support Staff for Exceptional Students and Inclusive Education

Job Summary
The Special Education Teaching Assistant will work closely with our team of teachers and staff to provide individualized support to students with special needs. This is a full-time position, working 6.5 hours a day, 178 days a year, with a competitive hourly rate determined by the CEA collective bargaining agreement, starting at $16.00 per hour. As a key member of our support staff, you will assist in creating a positive and inclusive learning environment that promotes social, emotional, and academic growth for all students.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist teachers in planning, preparing, and implementing instructional activities and materials to meet the diverse needs of special education students
- Provide one-on-one support and small group instruction to students with special needs, adapting materials and strategies as needed
- Help maintain a safe, organized, and respectful classroom environment, ensuring the well-being and engagement of all students
- Develop and implement behavior management plans, using positive reinforcement techniques to support students' social and emotional development
- Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and other support staff to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive approach to student support
- Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills in special education, staying up-to-date on best practices and research-based strategies
- Maintain accurate records and reports, including student progress, behavior, and attendance, to inform instruction and support student growth
Qualifications and Requirements
To be considered for this role, you must meet one of the following licensure requirements:
- Current Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL)
- Current Illinois Substitute Teaching License
- Current Illinois Educator License with Stipulations Endorsed-Paraprofessional Educator
- Associate degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution; 60 semester hours of coursework from a regionally accredited institution; High school diploma, or equivalent + 480 or higher on the ETS Parapro test; High school diploma, or equivalent + 4 or higher on the ACT WorkKeys Applied Math and Workplace Documents
- Current Illinois Short Term Approval (STA) - Paraprofessional, with a minimum age of 19 years old, and completion of the required application process
In addition to these requirements, you should possess:
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with teachers, staff, and students
- Knowledge of child guidance principles and practices, behavior management, and positive reinforcement techniques
- Basic record-keeping skills and ability to maintain accurate and confidential records
- Physical ability to lift, move, and position students, equipment, and materials, as needed
- Ability to work effectively with children, function within the framework of the school environment, and maintain a positive and respectful attitude
