The Opportunity
As a Mechanical Engineering Machine Shop Lab Supervisor and Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting the Mechanical Engineering Department's hands-on, experiential learning activities, complementing our undergraduate and graduate curricula. You will be responsible for supervising student activities in the Machine Shop Lab, ensuring compliance with health and safety policies, and providing training and guidance to students and faculty on the safe and efficient use of lab equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lab and Shop Supervision:
- Coordinate lab/shop use requests from faculty, students, and staff
- Maintain a master schedule of lab and shop facilities
- Assess feasibility of requests and advise on possible modifications
- Train and supervise students and student employees on safe tool and equipment use
- Monitor and supervise student groups in the Labs
- Training and Teaching Assistance:
- Provide students with necessary training for CNC and manual machines
- Assist in the instruction of ME 208: Manufacturing Lab
- Serve as a mechanical design tutor for students and faculty
- Facilities Operations:
- Plan and perform machining, woodwork, welding, and fabrication tasks
- Maintain an inventory of equipment in shops and instructional labs
- Research and evaluate specifications for mechanical, electrical, and hardware components
- Handle purchasing of routine supplies and design and build new equipment
- Maintenance:
- Maintain and repair machines and lab equipment
- Oversee contracted repair when necessary
- Coordinate with custodial contractors to maintain lab and shop spaces
- Safety:
- Implement safety procedures in shops and instructional labs
- Provide continual safety instruction to students and faculty
- Maintain the MSDS (hazardous material data sheet) system
Qualifications and Requirements
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- An Associate's degree or completion of a program of 18+ months after high school
- A minimum of 3-5 years of related work experience
- Experience in coordination with a physical plant, training on machines/equipment, and monitoring of lab usage
- Ability to work self-sufficiently on a wide variety of tasks and perform machining, woodworking, welding, and fabrication
- Knowledge of safety procedures for labs and shops, as well as familiarity with the MSDS system
- Broad knowledge and flexibility, with the ability to supervise student activities and work with the University's Environmental, Health and Safety Officer
- Effective oral and written communication skills, with experience working with young adults (18-25 years old)
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes (milling, welding, turning, etc.) and familiarity with OSHA and other safety/health regulations
Preferred Qualifications
While not required, the following qualifications are highly desirable:
- Experience in a teaching or training environment
- Familiarity with CNC manufacturing and programming
- Knowledge of mechanical design and fabrication techniques
