About Our Cyber Security Team

Target's security team is a dynamic and innovative group of professionals who are dedicated to protecting our guests, team members, and business from cyber threats. As a Principal Security Engineer and Architect, you'll play a critical role in ensuring the security and integrity of our systems, data, and infrastructure. You'll collaborate with technical and leadership teams across all of Target Tech to identify and mitigate security risks, develop and implement secure architecture, and provide expertise on information security for complex systems and applications.

Key Responsibilities

As a Principal Security Engineer and Architect, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborating with system designers to integrate security requirements into the design phase of IT systems
  • Developing and maintaining security architecture documentation, including security models, frameworks, and diagrams
  • Ensuring that security architecture aligns with the organization's business objectives and regulatory requirements
  • Providing expertise on information security for complex systems and applications in cloud and on-prem environments
  • Understanding security risks to identify potential vulnerabilities and threats
  • Developing risk mitigation strategies and recommending appropriate security controls
  • Designing and implementing security solutions, including firewalls, encryption protocols, and access control mechanisms
  • Collaborating with development and operations teams to ensure secure creation and deployment of IT systems
  • Providing guidance on secure coding practices
  • Prioritizing driving highly impactful changes that improve the business
  • Conducting full-stack architecture reviews of products and platforms
  • Designing security reference architectures and creating implementation/configuration guides

  • Collaborating with engineering teams to perform advanced security analysis on complex cloud systems, identifying gaps while contributing to design solutions and security requirements

Essential Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you'll need:

  • A 4-year degree or equivalent work experience
  • 10+ years of hands-on technology experience with extensive knowledge of Cybersecurity domains, including Information Protection, Cloud Security, Networking Security, IAM, Cryptography, Automation, and SIEM
  • Language-agnostic programming skills, with experience in multiple languages across different platforms (e.g., Java, Python, Go, C, Scala)
  • A strong understanding of secure software development
  • Proven history of effectively utilizing a variety of security tools and technologies across diverse environments
  • Good understanding of security management workflows in large enterprise organizations and complex environments
  • Good understanding of the current threat landscape and the challenges that most organizations are facing
  • In-depth knowledge of security frameworks, standards, and best practices (e.g., NIST, ISO/IEC 27001)
  • Experience with firewalls, IDS/IPS, SIEM, and DLP
  • Expertise in containerization technologies and tools (e.g., Kubernetes)
  • Solid understanding of AI and ML fundamentals
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with strong presentation abilities
  • Demonstrated curiosity that seeks out cross-team collaboration opportunities
  • Stays relevant with latest security technologies through self-directed learning

Preferred Qualifications

While not required, the following qualifications are preferred:

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or a related field
  • Certifications in Cybersecurity, such as CISSP, CEH, or CISM
  • Experience with cloud security platforms, such as AWS or Azure
  • Knowledge of DevOps practices and tools, such as Jenkins or Docker
  • Experience with security orchestration, automation, and response (SOAR) tools
  • Familiarity with agile development methodologies and version control systems, such as Git

Compensation, Perks, and Benefits

The pay range for this role is $144,400.00 - $259,900.00 per year, depending on experience and qualifications. In addition to your salary, you'll be eligible for a range of benefits and perks, including those listed above. We also offer a range of other benefits, such as:
