About the Role: Associate Counsel - San Antonio (Remote)

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Associate Counsel to join our team in San Antonio, with the opportunity to work remotely. As an Associate Counsel, you will play a critical role in defending lawsuits filed in Texas courts and handling first-party insurance defense cases. Your expertise and knowledge of insurance defense litigation will be invaluable in helping us navigate complex legal matters and ensuring the best possible outcomes for our clients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research and analyze laws, preparing legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda to support our defense strategies
  • Render opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department, providing expert guidance and insight
  • Prepare and handle pleadings, motions, and discovery, including depositions/examinations before trial and examinations under oath
  • Defend cases by trial or dispositive hearing, as applicable, and negotiate settlements when necessary
  • Collaborate with the Claims Department and other stakeholders to ensure seamless communication and coordination
  • Travel as required to attend trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences, representing GEICO with professionalism and integrity

Qualifications:

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • 2-6+ years of experience in insurance defense litigation, with a strong background in personal injury and civil litigation
  • A Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
  • Admission to the Texas Bar, with a valid license to practice law in Texas and a commitment to maintaining licensing requirements, including Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements
  • Excellent research, analytical, and communication skills, with the ability to document files clearly and concisely
  • Strong organization, priority-setting, and multi-tasking skills, with the ability to follow complex instructions and resolve conflicts
  • Proficiency in learning and applying large amounts of technical and procedural information

Preferred Qualifications:

While not required, the following qualifications are preferred:

  • Civil litigation experience, with a focus on insurance defense-related litigation
  • Experience communicating effectively in a professional manner, both in person and in writing
  • A strong understanding of Texas law and court procedures
