About the Department and Ánimo Latinx Counseling Emphasis

The Department of Counseling at CSUF is a CACREP-accredited program that prepares graduate students to seek the Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) and the Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) credentials in California. Our Ánimo Latinx Counseling Emphasis is designed to address the professional, curricular, and training needs of mental health counselors working with Latinx and Spanish-speaking clients. The emphasis focuses on developing self-awareness as a bilingual and bicultural counselor, knowledge of Latinx cultures and therapeutic Spanish, familiarity with interventions appropriate to Latinx and Spanish-speaking clients, and social justice advocacy for issues relevant to the Latinx community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach courses in the Ánimo Latinx Counseling Emphasis and the core CACREP curriculum with the Clinical Mental Health Counseling specialty.
  • Conduct research that leads to peer-reviewed publications, advancing the field of counselor education and Latinx mental health.
  • Contribute to and participate in the life and development of the department, advise students, serve on committees, and engage in the broader university and disciplinary communities.
  • Maintain a firm commitment to valuing multicultural perspectives with an intersectional lens, demonstrating a professional track record that reflects this commitment.
  • Integrate technology effectively into instruction and stay updated on best practices in counselor education.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate in counselor education, counseling psychology, or a related field by the appointment date.
  • Demonstrated professional identity as a counselor educator, with clear affiliations to relevant counseling associations (e.g., ACA/ACES).
  • Broad knowledge of the clinical mental health counseling curriculum.
  • Bilingual fluency in spoken Spanish.
  • Knowledge of Latinx cultures and social justice issues relevant to the Latinx community.
  • Evidence of the ability to conduct research, including dissertation research.
  • University-level teaching experience, including co-teaching and/or guest lecturing.
  • Demonstrated potential for effective integration of technology into instruction.
  • Demonstrated awareness/knowledge of racial inequities and challenges faced by historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged groups.
  • Demonstrated commitment and contributions to social justice advocacy through teaching, research, and/or service activities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • In-depth knowledge of social justice issues such as critical race theory, liberation psychology, and intersectionality.
  • Proficiency in reading and writing Spanish.
  • Graduation from a CACREP-accredited program.
  • Experience with CACREP accreditation.
  • Licensed or license-eligible as a professional counselor or equivalent (e.g., LPC, LPCC, LMCHC) in the current state or license-eligible in California.

Compensation and Benefits

The Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary range is $5,405 to $11,994 monthly (12 monthly payments per academic year), with an anticipated hiring range of $6,480 to $6,607 per month. Salary offered is commensurate with experience and qualifications. In addition to the competitive salary, CSUF offers a comprehensive benefits package and opportunities for summer research grants, moving expenses, start-up funds, and a reduced teaching load.
