The City of La Habra is seeking a passionate and dedicated Part-Time and Substitute Teacher to join our Child Development Division, School-Age and Pre-School Programs. Job Summary

As a Part-Time and Substitute Teacher, you will play a vital role in instructing children in activities that promote their overall development. Under the direction of the Lead Teacher and/or Program Specialist, you will prepare and teach lessons, assist in planning programs and activities, and oversee assistants and volunteers in the classroom.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plans and implements lesson plans for school-age or preschool-age children
  • Oversees classroom and playground activities, ensuring a safe and engaging environment
  • Teaches, supervises, and instructs children, adapting to their individual needs and abilities
  • Oversees staff and volunteers, providing guidance and support as needed
  • Plans and implements parent involvement activities, fostering a strong partnership between home and school
  • Performs related duties as required, demonstrating flexibility and a willingness to adapt to changing circumstances

Qualifications and Requirements

To be eligible for this position, you must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Hold a Child Development Teacher Permit or higher
  • Meet the requirements for a Child Development Associate Teacher Permit (50 days of experience, 12 Child Development Core Units, and continuous enrollment in school until obtaining the permit)
  • Meet the requirements for a Child Development Teacher Permit (175 days of experience, 24 Child Development Core Units, and 16 general education units)
  • Possess an AA or higher degree in ECE/CD or a related field, with 3 units of supervised field experience in an ECE/CD setting

Additionally, you must:

  • Possess a valid California Class C Driver's License
  • Obtain Pediatric First Aid and Pediatric CPR certification within 30 days of employment
  • Pass California Community Care Licensing fingerprint clearance to work with children
  • Maintain a valid California Class C driver's license and proof of automobile insurance coverage

Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to bilingual (Spanish/English) applicants, as well as those with experience working with children with disabilities.

To be successful in this role, you must possess:

  • Knowledge of child development psychology and behavior theories
  • Ability to communicate effectively with children and their parents
  • Skill in planning and implementing engaging lesson plans
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
  • Excellent customer service skills

Physical and Mental Demands

The physical and mental demands of this role include:

  • Moderately heavy work, requiring regular sitting, standing, talking, and hearing
  • Frequent walking, climbing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling
  • Lifting and carrying small children (up to 50 pounds) as needed
  • Sitting on the floor and getting up and down to assist children
  • Close vision and ability to adjust focus
  • Working on multiple concurrent tasks with constant interruptions
