Key Responsibilities

  • Tutor students in writing and communication skills, both face-to-face and online, using a variety of strategies to cater to diverse clientele.
  • Develop positive learning skills in students, including critical thinking, analytical skills, research skills, and effective written communication.
  • Provide a forum for participatory learning, encouraging active student involvement and understanding of concepts without rewriting papers or completing assignments.
  • Refer students to Learning Commons resources and other academic services, as needed.
  • Maintain assigned hours, attend mandatory trainings, and interpret Learning Commons procedures for students, tutors, and visitors.
  • Assist with resource development, special projects, and events, including preparing handouts, workshops, website content, and social media posts.
  • Aid students in scheduling appointments and maintain detailed records via WCOnline for data collection purposes.

Requirements and Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled University of North Texas at Dallas student making satisfactory progress toward a bachelor's degree.
  • Must qualify for work-study eligibility (determined by Financial Aid).
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Completed ENGL 1313 (Composition I) and ENGL 1323 (Composition II) or equivalent courses with an A or B.
  • Recommended by a faculty member who can attest to your writing skills (recommendation must be in email format).
  • Intermediate to advanced level of knowledge in English composition, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to work 12-19 hours per week.
  • Knowledge of (or ability to rapidly assimilate and retain) University academic policy, procedure, and practices.
  • Knowledge of FERPA.
  • Strong ability to work independently and make decisions within the framework of broad goals and objectives.

Skills and Competencies

  • Excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills.
  • Empathy and ability to relate to a diverse student body population.
  • Skill in telephone etiquette and courteous communication with the public.
  • Basic MS Office skills and ability to operate office machines.
  • Ability to use web-based software (such as Zoom) for online tutoring.
