Experienced Early Literacy Tutor for TK-2nd Grade Students – Supporting Reading Skills Development in a Dynamic Educational Environment

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Early Literacy Tutor to join our team at Greenleaf Elementary, part of the Oakland Unified School District. As an Early Literacy Tutor, you will play a vital role in supporting the development of reading skills in our TK-2nd grade students. About the Position
This is a part-time position (0.8 FTE), working 6 hours per day, with a competitive salary range of $16.22 - $18.74 per hour. As an Early Literacy Tutor, you will be responsible for providing intentional, data-driven literacy instruction and intervention to improve the reading skills of our students. You will work closely with our teaching staff, coaches, and other educators to ensure that our students receive the support they need to succeed.
Key Responsibilities
- Attend training sessions, such as the SEEDS of Early Literacy Training and/or Systematic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words (SIPPS), to develop your skills and knowledge in early literacy strategies.
- Provide one-on-one and small group instruction to students, using research-based interventions and scripted programs to support their reading development.
- Collaborate with teachers, coaches, and other educators to set instructional schedules, report student progress, and make data-informed modifications to instruction.
- Assess student outcomes and progress using benchmark and progress-monitoring assessments, and use this data to inform your instruction and make adjustments as needed.
- Participate in literacy coaching sessions to review student progress, plan instruction, and set goals, and incorporate constructive feedback into your practice.
- Record student and program data accurately and completely, using online databases and/or Excel documents, to track student progress and program effectiveness.
Essential Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need to possess the following essential qualifications:
- A high school diploma or equivalent, with a strong interest in education and a passion for supporting the development of early language and literacy skills in children.
- The ability to speak, read, write, and understand English fluently, with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Basic computer skills, including the ability to navigate and use online database systems and email, with the ability to learn and adapt to new technologies.
- A results-oriented, student-focused approach, with strong planning and time management skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- A valid California driver's license, if applicable, and the ability to travel between sites and to off-site events as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
While not required, the following qualifications are preferred:
- College coursework, a college degree, or equivalent work experience in education or a related field, with a strong understanding of early childhood development and literacy instruction.
- Experience working with young children, preferably in an early childhood setting, with a strong ability to relate to diverse groups of people and sustain relationships.
- A patient, positive, and adaptable approach, with a sense of humor and a non-judgmental attitude, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with constant interruptions.
