About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated High School StepMojo Teacher's Assistant to join our team at North Star Academy in Newark, NJ. As a Teacher's Assistant, you will play a critical support role in delivering high-quality online learning experiences to our students, working closely with our teachers and staff to provide personalized support and guidance. Key Responsibilities

• Manage the classroom/workspace environment, creating a safe, structured, and effective learning environment that excites and invests students
• Provide in-person support for students, tracking and monitoring attendance, and intervening if truancy occurs
• Serve as a thought partner to work through issues during independent work time, providing in-the-moment feedback to students regarding their participation in class
• Connect students who are struggling behaviorally or academically with the appropriate StepMojo or North Star resources
• Conference with students' family and academic advisor, keeping everyone informed of the learning
• Establish asynchronous check-in routines and procedures with each course instructor, sharing insights as to how students are engaging with the content
• Provide feedback to StepMojo and North Star, participating in periodic feedback sessions and ongoing training
• Assist teachers with instruction, assessments, grading, and other classroom responsibilities
• Potentially teach small groups of students, providing one-on-one and small group tutoring daily, and small group intervention and student support

Essential Qualifications

• Demonstrated interest in impacting K-12 students in urban schools and communities (1-2 years experience preferred)
• Evidence of self-motivation, willingness to be a team player, and a strong sense of personal responsibility
• Ideal candidates are hard-working, urgent, energetic, and willing to learn and adapt
• Strong time management skills, ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and meet tight deadlines
• A strong candidate will possess strong organizational skills, communication skills (particularly with children), and problem-solving skills
• Relentless commitment to the mission of educating urban students, with a belief in and alignment with Uncommon's core beliefs and educational philosophy

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree preferred, but not required
• Background in education is not required, though candidates should show a demonstrated passion for working with K-12 students
• Prior experience working in schools and/or urban communities is preferred but not required
