Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Upward Bound Math and Science Director, the Program Advisor will counsel high school students enrolled in the program, developing and implementing academic support and enrichment programming tailored to their needs. The advisor will serve as a resource to motivate students to apply, enroll, and succeed in higher education, acting as a liaison between students, parents/guardians, and high school staff. This position requires a deep understanding of the challenges faced by first-generation and low-income students, as well as the ability to provide career and college counseling, assist with academic planning, and facilitate workshops and seminars on college preparation and readiness.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and assist with the implementation of program objectives, focusing on helping first-generation and/or low-income students prepare for postsecondary enrollment.
  • Serve as an academic advisor to high school students, advising on academic choices and performance, and monitoring student progress towards successful completion of high school studies.
  • Act as a liaison with students, parents/guardians, and high school staff, responding to inquiries, making referrals as appropriate, and ensuring quality advising and program development.
  • Provide career and college counseling to assist students in appraising their interests, aptitudes, and abilities, and in educational and vocational planning.
  • Counsel students regarding college choices, assist them in gaining admission, and help them obtain financial aid and scholarships.
  • Participate in all program planning, identify the need for changes, and recommend improvements in the program.
  • Assist with the planning of a summer commuter component, providing academic support and preparation, and ensure students' safety and compliance with the University's policies.
  • Plan and organize periodic group meetings for all participants and coordinate student activities during the academic year component.
  • Deliver workshops, seminars, and presentations on college preparation and readiness to students, parents, and school staff.
  • Participate in student recruitment, including disseminating program objectives, reviewing records, interviewing students and families, and recommending final selections.
  • Supervise a tutoring program designed to supplement high school courses, determining student needs, scheduling tutoring sessions, and monitoring student progress.
  • Administer diagnostic tests, develop an appropriate educational program, and monitor student performance and progress towards successful completion of the high school program.
  • Maintain a program database to document students' services and track retention, graduation, and postsecondary progress.
  • Prepare quarterly reports on each student, describing counseling activities and providing specific details regarding student progress.

Essential Qualifications

To be considered for this role, candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree and a minimum of three years of related experience, including at least one year of experience working with high school students in a diverse environment. Experience in school counseling, community work, or social agency is highly valued. Demonstrated excellent communication and interpersonal skills, knowledge of higher education, and the challenges faced by low-income, first-generation to college, and underrepresented students are essential. The ability to report to multiple worksites and work flexible hours, as well as a commitment to the non-residential, commuter summer component, is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Education and/or experience working in a STEM field or providing STEM education.
  • Two or more years of experience working with high school students in a diverse environment.
  • Experience with providing academic and college preparation programming.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish.
