Pharmacy Specialist, Pain Management (Pharmacist 5) - Pharmacy Inpatient - University of California - Sacramento, CA - work from home job Company: University of California Job description: The Specialist Pharmacist is an expert in a specialized area of pharmacy practice, providing drug therapy and pharmacological consultation on the most complex patients and overseeing the competency level of other pharmacy staff in their designated specialty. In addition, the incumbent is responsible to manage drug costs in their designated therapeutic area(s) and to facilitate cost containment: a) collects and presents data to various pain and sedation committees, as well as the Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Committee on the use of P&T Restricted medications, b) works with the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Coordinator to develop and conduct drug use evaluations, protocols and policy development c) works with the Clinical Coordinator in managing drug costs. The specialist will also participate in medical staff committees as requested and be an active member. The pharmacist specialist also participates in general clinical patient care activities and provides support to various pharmacy areas as needed. Their responsibility is to provide quality and cost-effective pharmaceutical care to patients, employees and medical staff of UC Davis Health. They are an integral member of the health care team, responsible for drug therapy monitoring, drug distribution, drug information, precepting pharmacy students and residents, conducting clinical research, participation in Department and Hospital committees, task forces, and work groups and fostering excellent interdepartmental relationships. Minimum Qualifications Applicants are encouraged to upload license and certification if required of the position. • Completion of a PGY1 Pharmacy Residency. • Completion of a PGY2 Residency in Pain management, or a PGY1 with a minimum of five years of experience in similar clinical practice (as a pain management specialist) in an academic medical center setting. • Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent experience. • Drug information training and experience • Clinical pharmacy training or experience • Educational experience and ability to work with, direct, and evaluate pharmacy residents and students. • Educational experience and ability to work with and direct health care professionals. • Prior experience in techniques required or ability to learn. • Complete working knowledge of, and skill to apply, practices, principles and techniques of patient care related to area of expertise. • Ability to communicate well and make independent decisions to resolve minor problems as they arise. • Ability to oversee technicians and establish priorities of work-flow. • Written and oral communication skills to clearly and concisely provide information, explanations and instructions to, and to elicit information from others with varying levels of ability to understand, including individuals who are ill or distressed, or who may not speak English. • Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain a friendly, welcoming environment for our healthsystem customers; to demonstrate an interested, understanding, compassionate manner; to maintain a courteous and calm demeanor; and to use a proactive approach to negotiate with and persuade others to take required action. • Ability to maintain composure, efficiency and a positive, customer-service oriented manner during periods of peak workload, with frequent interruptions, under tight deadlines, and when interacting with challenging customers who may be ill, angry, or emotionally distressed. • Problem-solving skills to independently recognize and define a problem; identify the resources available to help solve the problem; create and implement viable solutions; and follow through to ensure the problem is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties. • Decision-making skills to independently exercise delegate authority to take action, and to recognize when it is appropriate to seek assistance from others when limits of delegated authority have been reached. • Ability to exercise discretion to ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained, and a professional, respectful clinic/department environment exists at all times. Preferred Qualifications • Board certified in their area of expertise if available (e.g. BCPS) • Completion of additional training focused on pain/opioid stewardship (e.g. ASHP Opioid Stewardship Certificate). • Completion of PGY2 Residency in area of position emphasis or equivalent experience consisting of 5 years of similar clinical practice in an academic medical center required. • Meets American Society of Health Systems Pharmacy qualified preceptor standards. • Actively publishes and presents highly quality research or quality improvement work related to their area of expertise at the state and national level • Previous hospital practice experience in pain management preferred. • Knowledge of national guidelines and regulatory and accreditation standards regarding opioid use. • Previous experience with data collection and analysis and application to performance improvement. Experience with EPIC or other CPOE systems preferred. Department Description The Pharmacy Department provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient pharmaceutical services (prescriptions, unit dose, IV admixtures, clinical infusion pumps and teaching) throughout the Medical Center complex 24 hours per day. The Department is comprised of three inpatient and six outpatient pharmacies, a sterile production lab and the full complement of pharmacy purchasing, stores and distribution.
