Why This Role Matters – The Impact You’ll Have

As a Remote Part‑Time Process Safety Engineer with a flexible schedule, you will be the trusted technical advisor who empowers our clients to mitigate risk, protect workers, and optimize processes. Your expertise will influence design decisions, operational practices, and emergency response strategies across a broad spectrum of industries throughout North America and beyond. By delivering clear, actionable safety solutions, you directly contribute to safer workplaces, reduced environmental footprints, and stronger regulatory compliance for our clients.

Role Overview – What You’ll Be Doing

This position blends independent, remote consulting work with occasional on‑site engagements. You will partner with the Process Safety Consulting Manager, cross‑functional project teams, and client stakeholders to deliver high‑quality safety assessments, reports, and recommendations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive process safety assessments for equipment, systems, and procedures, ensuring alignment with OSHA, Process Safety Management (PSM), and other applicable regulations.
  • Perform risk analyses focused on combustible dust, flammable liquids and gases, chemical reaction hazards, and other high‑hazard materials.
  • Interpret and apply industry standards—including NFPA codes, building and fire codes, FM Global guidelines, and international best practices—to client facilities.
  • Develop detailed technical reports, executive summaries, and presentation decks that translate complex safety data into actionable recommendations for client leadership.
  • Collaborate closely with clients through timely communication, virtual meetings, and on‑site visits to gather data, clarify requirements, and ensure alignment on project objectives.
  • Provide guidance on testing protocols when necessary, recommending appropriate laboratory or field tests to validate safety controls.
  • Support business development efforts by reviewing RFPs, preparing quotations, and contributing technical expertise to proposals and marketing materials.
  • Participate in peer‑review activities, offering constructive feedback on reports, marketing papers, and presentation content.
  • Stay current with regulatory updates and emerging industry trends, proactively recommending process improvements to clients.
  • Mentor junior engineers and share knowledge across the consulting team, fostering a culture of continuous learning.
  • Flexibly manage travel commitments, with up to 50% domestic or international travel required for on‑site assessments and client meetings.

Essential Qualifications – What We Require

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Fire Protection Engineering, or a related safety discipline. Advanced degrees are a plus.
  • Professional Credentials: Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) designation preferred. Additional safety certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional), CFEI (Certified Fire & Explosives Inspector), CCPSC (Certified Control of Pressure Safety Consultant), or PE (Professional Engineer) are highly valued.
  • Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of hands‑on experience in process safety engineering, risk assessment, or related fields within manufacturing, petrochemical, or related sectors.
  • Technical Proficiency: Demonstrated expertise in PSM, RMP, combustible dust regulations, and chemical reaction safety. Strong familiarity with NFPA 70 (Electrical), NFPA 30 (Flammable & Combustible Liquids), NFPA 652 (Combustible Dust), OSHA Process Safety Management, and related statutes.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication abilities, capable of conveying technical concepts to both engineering and non‑technical audiences.
  • Project Management: Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, and deliver high‑quality documentation under pressure.
  • Physical Capability: Ability to travel extensively, navigate varied client environments, lift up to 50 lb, and stand for extended periods during on‑site assessments.

Preferred Qualifications – Nice‑to‑Have Enhancements

  • Experience with hazardous material handling in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, food processing, or aerospace.
  • Familiarity with international standards (e.g., IEC, EN) and multi‑jurisdictional compliance requirements.
  • Background in developing or delivering safety training programs for plant personnel.
  • Proficiency in safety management software (e.g., SAP EHS, Enablon, Intelex) and data analytics tools.
  • Multilingual abilities, particularly Spanish or French, for cross‑border client engagements.

Core Skills & Competencies – How You’ll Succeed

  • Analytical Thinking: Ability to dissect complex processes, identify root‑cause hazards, and devise practical mitigation strategies.

  • Leadership & Influence: Confidence to guide client teams, champion safety initiatives, and influence decision‑makers.
  • Adaptability: Comfort with shifting priorities, remote collaboration tools, and varied client cultures.
  • Ethical Judgment: Commitment to upholding the highest professional standards and confidentiality.
