Why Join Google Cloud?

Google Cloud — the backbone of digital transformation for enterprises worldwide — delivers the most advanced, secure, and scalable compute, storage, and data solutions on the planet. From startups building the next generation of web apps to Fortune 500 corporations migrating entire data centers, Google Cloud empowers more than 200 countries and territories to solve their most complex challenges with AI‑driven insights, sustainable infrastructure, and a relentless focus on performance. As part of the Google Cloud ecosystem, you will be at the forefront of shaping the future of computing, influencing how millions of developers, IT leaders, and end‑users access and consume virtual machine resources.

About the Role: Product Manager II, Virtual Machine Instances

We are looking for a dynamic, forward‑thinking Product Manager II to lead the strategy, definition, and launch of innovative virtual machine (VM) instance types within Google Compute Engine. This role is fully remote, offering the flexibility to work from anywhere while collaborating with world‑class engineers, designers, data scientists, finance partners, and senior leadership across global time zones. You will own the end‑to‑end product lifecycle, turning emerging hardware technologies and evolving workload demands into market‑ready VM offerings that drive revenue growth and deepen customer adoption.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Roadmapping: Define and continuously refine a multi‑year product roadmap for VM instance families, aligning emerging CPU architectures (x86, Arm), accelerator technologies, and storage innovations with market trends and customer demand.
  • New Instance Development: Lead cross‑functional teams to design, prototype, test, and launch new VM types—including bare‑metal instances, GPU‑optimized nodes, and specialized workloads such as AI, high‑performance computing (HPC), and edge computing.
  • Data‑Driven Prioritization: Leverage product analytics, usage data, and financial modeling to prioritize engineering initiatives, ensuring that every new capability delivers measurable business outcomes.
  • Stakeholder Alignment: Work closely with hardware partners, the Cloud Operations team, supply‑chain managers, and finance to ensure product readiness, cost‑effective scaling, and seamless integration into the broader Google Cloud portfolio.
  • Competitive Intelligence: Conduct ongoing market research and competitive analysis to surface opportunities, identify threats, and position Google’s VM offerings as the clear leader in performance, price‑performance, and sustainability.
  • Go‑to‑Market Execution: Partner with Marketing, Sales, and Solutions Engineering to craft compelling value propositions, develop launch plans, create technical documentation, and enable sales teams worldwide.
  • Customer Advocacy: Engage directly with enterprise customers, developers, and partners to gather feedback, co‑create solutions, and ensure that VM product features solve real‑world problems at scale.
  • Performance & Reliability Oversight: Define key performance indicators (KPIs) for availability, latency, and cost‑efficiency; collaborate with Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) to meet the highest uptime standards.

Essential Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Product Management Experience: Minimum of five (5) years leading product initiatives in technology‑focused environments, preferably within cloud computing, infrastructure, or hardware‑software integration.
  • Infrastructure Expertise: At least two (2) years of hands‑on experience developing, launching, or managing infrastructure products such as compute, storage, networking, or virtualization platforms.
  • Technical Fluency: Deep understanding of CPU architectures (x86, Arm), I/O subsystems, virtualization technologies, and the operational nuances of cloud‑based server environments.
  • Cross‑Functional Influence: Proven ability to communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences and to drive decisions across engineering, finance, legal, and executive leadership.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Degree: Master's degree in Technology Management, Business Administration, or a related discipline.
  • Product Launch Success: Demonstrated track record of bringing new technical products to market, from ideation through adoption, with clear evidence of revenue impact.
  • Workload Knowledge: Insight into the performance, security, and scaling requirements of varied workloads such as machine learning, batch processing, real‑time analytics, and database services.
  • Cloud Ecosystem Acumen: Familiarity with cloud‑native architectures, container orchestration (Kubernetes), and emerging trends in edge and serverless computing.
  • Leadership Presence: Ability to inspire, mentor, and influence senior leaders and cross‑functional teams, fostering a collaborative culture of innovation.

Skills & Competencies for Success

  • Analytical Mindset: Proficiency with data analysis tools (SQL, Looker, BigQuery) to surface insights that guide product decisions.
  • Strategic Vision: Capacity to see the big picture while executing detailed plans, balancing short‑term wins with long‑term strategic goals.
  • Customer‑Centric Thinking: Empathy for developer and enterprise needs, translating feedback into feature sets that solve real problems.
  • Effective Communication: Excellent written and verbal skills, capable of crafting clear product narratives, presentations, and executive briefings.
  • Agile Delivery: Experience working within agile frameworks (Scrum, Kanban) to iterate quickly and deliver high‑quality products.
  • Collaboration: Strong partnership skills with engineering, design, sales, and marketing teams, ensuring product success across the organization.

Career Growth & Learning Opportunities

Google Cloud invests heavily in the professional development of its product leaders. As a Product Manager II, you will gain access to:

  • Leadership Development Programs: Tailored courses in product strategy, negotiation, and executive communication.
  • Technical Upskilling: Internal bootcamps on emerging hardware (e.g., TPUs, custom ASICs), cloud security, and AI/ML platforms.
  • Mentorship Networks: Direct mentorship from senior product executives and seasoned engineers across Google.
  • Cross‑Functional Rotation: Opportunities to work temporarily with hardware design, data‑center operations, or go‑to‑market teams to broaden your perspective.
  • Global Impact: Your work will affect millions of users worldwide, offering a unique chance to shape the future of computing at scale.

Work Environment & Culture

At Google, we believe that great ideas flourish in an inclusive, supportive, and innovative environment. As a remote team member, you will enjoy:

  • Flexibility: Choose the work‑from‑home setup that best fits your lifestyle, with flexible hours and generous time‑off policies.
  • Collaboration Tools: State‑of‑the‑art video, chat, and project‑management platforms that keep you connected with global teammates.
  • Diversity & Inclusion: Initiatives that champion diverse voices, ensure equitable growth, and foster a sense of belonging.
  • Health & Wellness: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, mental‑health resources, and wellness allowances.
  • Community Engagement: Opportunities to join employee resource groups, volunteer programs, and internal tech talks.

Compensation, Perks & Benefits

Google offers a highly competitive total rewards package designed to attract and retain top talent. While exact figures vary based on location, experience, and role level, you can expect:

  • Base Salary: A market‑aligned salary range that reflects the seniority and impact of the role.
  • Performance Bonus: Annual discretionary bonuses tied to individual and company performance.
  • Equity Grants: Stock‑based compensation that aligns your success with Google’s long‑term growth.
  • Retirement Plans: 401(k) with company matching, helping you build a secure financial future.
  • Health & Wellness: Premium medical, dental, and vision plans, plus mental‑health coverage and wellness stipends.
  • Parental & Family Benefits: Generous paid parental leave, adoption assistance, and flexible work‑arrangements.
  • Learning & Development: Access to internal courses, external certifications, and a generous education reimbursement budget.
  • Employee Discounts: Savings on Google products, travel, entertainment, and partner services.
