Job Description

Join the CAT Interact team of CAT Digital that is responsible for providing a seamless way for our customers to communicate and connect on asset maintenance, repairs and work orders. Our product is written in Ruby on Rails and enhances customer experience with real time status update via 2-way messaging.

Job Duties

As a Principal Software Engineer, you will lead all stages of software development including refining product vision, gathering requirements, project planning, software system design, coding, testing, release, deployment and support.
• Competent to perform all programming (Ruby on Rails), project management, and development assignments without close supervision; normally assigned the more complex aspects of systems work.
• Lead role in complex projects spanning across multiple system components
• Work in all phases of product creation process including creating technical requirements, project planning, identifying dependencies, system architecture and development.
• Investigation and root cause analysis of software and system defects.
• Focus on productivity, quality and competitiveness of major technology initiatives.
• Apply knowledge and skills to solve most complex engineering problems.
• Organize and drive configuration management activities of the development process
• Works directly on complex application/technical problem identification and resolution, including responding to off-shift and weekend support calls.
• Works independently on complex systems or infrastructure components that may be used by one or more applications or systems.
• Drives application development focused around delivering business valuable features
• Mentor and assist software engineers, providing technical assistance and direction as needed
• Maintains high standards of software quality by establishing good practices and habits
• Identifies and encourage areas for growth and improvement
• Communicate with end users and internal customers to help direct development, debugging, and testing of application software for accuracy, integrity, interoperability, and completeness
• Performs integrated testing and customer acceptance testing of components that requires careful planning and execution to ensure timely, quality results.

Basic Qualifications
• Position typically requires a four-year degree from an accredited college or university.
• 10 years or more of software development experience or at least 8 years of experience with master’s degree in computer science or related field.
• 10 years or more of experience in designing and developing software applications on a service layer/ backend stack, 3+ of which is with Ruby on Rails
• 3 years or more of experience in public cloud technologies such as AWS or Azure.

Top Candidates Will Also Have
• Masters’ degree in computer science, information systems, or closely related disciplines
• Demonstrated leadership on medium to large-scale projects impacting strategic priorities.
• Ability to cope with shifting priorities, demands and timelines through analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to effectively prioritize, delegate responsibilities and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
• Proven experience in many of the following,
• Designing, developing, deploying and maintaining software at scale.
• Datastores such as Redis, ElastiCache, MySQL
• Developing software applications using relational and NoSQL databases.
• Application architectural patterns, such as MVC, Microservices, Event-driven, etc.
• Deploying software using CI/CD tools such as Github Actions, Jenkins, GoCD, Azure DevOps etc.
• Strong proficiency with Rails development tools such as Bundler and Rake
• Deep understanding of Active Record associations and ability to construct performant, complex queries
• At least 3 plus years of deploying and maintaining software using public clouds such as AWS or Azure.
• Working within an Agile framework (ideally Scrum).
• Working knowledge of JIRA and Azure DevOps (formerly VSTS), Confluence
• Debugging and maintaining software in Linux or Unix platforms.
• Strong understanding and/or experience in many of the following,
• Designing well-defined Restful APIs
• API tools such as Swagger, Postman and Assertible
• Test driven development and behavior driven development.
• Testing tools such as RSpec, minitest or Cucumber and their integration into CI/CD pipelines
• Background processing systems such as Sidekiq, Resque or DelayedJob
• Experience in .NET core desirable
• 2 years or more of developing customer facing applications using front-end frameworks, libraries (React / Angular / Polymer / Vue) and design patterns.
• 2 years or more of experience coding HTML 5, CSS3, JavaScript and Web components
• Must demonstrate solid knowledge of computer science fundamentals like data structures and algorithms.
• Ability to work under pressure and within time constraints.
• Passion for technology and innovation.

Additional Details

Preferred location is our Broomfield, CO office, but will allow for fully remote work for the right candidate in the United States with travel expectations of up to 5- 10% of the time.

Compensation & Benefits

Summary Pay Range: $136,488 - $204,732

Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.

$128,760.00 - $193,140.00
