Job Title: Blood Bank Technologist Department: University Hospital | Transfusion Service Scope of Position The Blood Bank Technologist prepares blood components for transfusion. Preparation of blood components includes: receiving blood products from outside sources, thawing FFP/ Cryoprecipitate, and allocating blood products for transfusions. Technologists process specimens to include entering test results into the computer system, ABO/RH typing, crossmatching, antibody screening and identification. The Blood Bank Technologist receives telephone inquiries regarding specimens, test results, and product availability. The Blood Bank Technologist is responsible for issuing blood and blood products for patient transfusion. Staff must maintain patient files receive and distributes supplies within the department. This is a very complex transfusion service and serves a very diverse patient population. The department is staffed 24 hours per day, seven days a week. Position Summary The Blood Bank Technologist processes patient specimens to include ABO/RH typing, crossmatching, antibody screen/identification. Handles phone inquires regarding patient results, specimen collection and product availability. The Blood Bank Technologist will participate in quality control, quality assurance and general laboratory duties such as filing and data entry. Other duties and projects will be assigned to staff on an as needed basis. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology/Med Lab Science or biological science degree, with MT/MLS certification. If not certified, applicant must obtain MLS certification within 1 year of hire, with first board of certification test attempt within the first six months of hire.
