Job Summary

The Frances Willson Thompson Library and Genesee Historical Collections Center seek an Assistant Librarian for User Experience to join a community of information professionals dedicated to empowering intellectual and personal growth through access to diverse resources and a welcoming, student-centered environment. The Assistant Librarian for User Experience coordinates data gathering, analysis, and dissemination for the library and archives and conducts usability studies with students, faculty, and staff. Using this knowledge, they work with colleagues to develop the library and archives? physical space, website, and other online spaces, with the goal of creating a sense of community for users both in-person and online. They provide assistance and instruction services to students, faculty, staff, and others in support of coursework, research, and general inquiry. In collaboration with colleagues, the person in this position will develop relationships with colleges and schools, academic support units, and other student-facing units at UM-Flint and provide research assistance, specialized research support services, instruction, workshops, and seminars in online and in-person formats.

Responsibilities

Conduct studies and gather analyze, and disseminate data to develop the library and archives? in-person and online spaces
? Collaborate with colleagues engaged in user experience, data management, and web development
? Develop and conduct library/archives usability studies
? Coordinate the design of the library website and develop content for the website and other online spaces
? Assist the Archives with web and digital projects

Provide services to students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community users, in-person and online
? Assist library users with access to library resources
? Provide in-depth consultation
? Answer reference and research queries
? Lead instruction sessions, individually or in collaboration with colleagues

Provide specialized research support services to students and faculty engaged in research and scholarship
? Assist students and faculty in finding and using specialized library resources
? Engage in training and exploration of specialized library resources
? Consult with colleagues on specialized library resources

Engage in service activities
? Participate in library committees and teams
? Participate in University committees and teams
? Participate in relevant professional committees and organizations at the local, regional and/or national level

Engage in professional development and scholarship activities
? Attend relevant webinars, training sessions, and conferences
? Explore opportunities for presentation and writing for publication

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
? Earned Master of Library and Information Science degree by July 1, 2025 from an ALA-accredited program, or equivalent degree.
? An understanding of user experience and data management fundamentals
? Understanding of website creation and management fundamentals
? Strong service and outreach orientation and ability to make connections and work effectively with students, faculty, and staff
? Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
? Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
? Ability to work on multiple projects at the same time
? Ability to engage in scholarly and service activities in keeping with the requirements for Librarians, Archivists, and Curators (LACs) at the University of Michigan-Flint

Desired Qualifications
? Other additional education, background, or willingness to learn in any degree area offered by UM-Flint to aid in serving our students and faculty in various degree programs is desired
? Experience working in a library or archives
? Experience working in higher education
? Teaching experience
? Experience with website creation or management
? Experience in user experience or data management

Additional Information

This is a regular, full-time (12 Month), 100% appointment and is subject to the collective bargaining agreement between the Regents of the University of Michigan and the University of Michigan Lecturer's Employee Organization, AFT Local 6244, AFL-CIO, Librarians, Archivists, and Curators Bargaining Unit.

Salary Information

LEO-GLAM Minimum Salary is $61,000 at the Assistant Librarian level, commensurate with experience and qualifications

Modes of Work: Hybrid

The work requirements allow both onsite and offsite work and an employee has an expected recurring onsite presence. On occasion, the employee may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by unit leadership or their designee and/or the job requirements.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, on behalf of their Librarian, Archivists, and Curator bargaining unit (LEO-GLAM), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
