WebAssembly Runtime and Cross Platform Integration (Internship)

Company Overview

Siemens Foundational Technology (FT) is the central R&D department of Siemens and thus has a key role to shape the future of our products. FT acts as a strategic partner to support the executive units of Siemens. In consequence, the main research focus is on future technologies for industry, infrastructure, mobility, and healthcare. In this context we are looking for an Intern that supports our Software Systems and Processes team in Princeton, NJ by designing a new mechanism for exposing host system functionality to WebAssembly runtimes.

Role Summary

Outside of the browser, there are over 20 different WebAssembly runtimes. Almost every one of these runtimes needs to interact with the platform they execute on top of, Windows, MacOS, Linux, etc. To achieve this today each of the runtimes implements a WebAssembly System Interface (WASI). However, while each runtime provides identical functionality and access to the host platform, they all implement their own version of WASI.

Is it possible to provide a single implementation of a WASI system interface that can work across multiple runtimes?

For this research question, we are looking for a motivated and talented Master's or PhD student with experience in system-level programming to take on this challenge. You will be responsible for designing and implementing a common interface across multiple runtimes. This should allow multiple ?plugins? representing an example system interface to be loaded by at least two different runtimes.

The position is a full-time position for 3-6 months and can be executed either on-site in Princeton, NJ, or remotely.

Key Responsibilities
? Analysis of existing plugin architectures for WebAssembly runtimes, from the Wasm-C-API through to WasmEdge?s plugin architecture
? Design and document an application binary interface for loading system level extensions
? Implement the interface across two WebAssembly runtimes
? Provide example system level access additions via the interface
? Build prototypes to evaluate and validate design concepts.

Basic Qualifications
? Must be Enrolled in Computer science or engineering master or PhD program for computer science or engineering
? Currently pursuing a master or PhD in Computer Science, or Engineering
? Experience with C / C++Authorization to be in the United States of America and currently holding a valid work permit for the US.

Preferred Skills
? Enrolled in a master program or PhD program with a background in systems level programming, compiler construction, or runtime, interpreter engineering
? Basic knowledge of user research methodologies
? An appreciation for designing developer experiences
? Knowledge with WebAssembly
? Experience with Win32, or Linux development
? Background with Rust development
? Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
? Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
