As a Senior Environmental Health & Safety Specialist, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the health, safety, and environmental protection of our facilities and operations worldwide.
This role is integral to the success of our EHS team, supporting a diverse range of facilities including our Waukee data center, which serves as a critical hub for our infrastructure, online services, and logistics. You will be the primary EHS resource for these operations, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to maintain a safe and compliant work environment. Your responsibilities will encompass a broad spectrum of EHS activities, from risk assessment and compliance to incident investigation and continuous improvement initiatives.
Responsibilities:
- EHS Program Management: Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive EHS programs and procedures aligned with Apple's standards, regulatory requirements (federal, state, and local), and industry best practices.
- Facility Safety & Compliance: Oversee site operations, ensuring adherence to safety protocols, engineering controls, and operational procedures within our data centers and other facilities. This includes managing construction activities, contractor oversight, and maintaining safety permits and documentation.
- Risk Assessment & Hazard Control: Conduct thorough job hazard analyses (JHAs), identify potential risks, and implement effective control measures to mitigate hazards. Approve work permits and ensure safe work practices are followed.
- Contractor & Vendor Management: Effectively oversee and coordinate EHS activities related to on-site contractors and vendors, ensuring their compliance with Apple's safety standards.
- Incident Investigation & Corrective Action: Lead or participate in incident investigations, identify root causes, develop and implement corrective and preventive actions to prevent recurrence.
- Auditing & Compliance: Conduct regular EHS audits and inspections to ensure compliance with regulations and internal policies. Prepare for and participate in internal and external audits.
- Environmental Compliance: Manage compliance with environmental regulations related to air, water, and waste management, including permitting and reporting requirements.
- Industrial Hygiene: Perform industrial hygiene assessments and recommend appropriate control measures to protect employee health.
- Training & Communication: Develop and deliver EHS training programs for employees and contractors. Communicate EHS information effectively to all stakeholders.
- Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process improvement and implement initiatives to enhance EHS performance. Stay abreast of emerging EHS trends and technologies.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with facility operations, engineering, and other departments to integrate EHS considerations into all aspects of business activities.
- Support Corporate EHS Initiatives: Contribute to the development and implementation of corporate EHS initiatives focused on system enhancements, standards development, and technology implementation.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health & Safety or a related technical field required.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive experience in EHS, with a strong emphasis on construction, contractor management, and data center facility maintenance and operations.
- Proven working knowledge of facilities management, engineering principles, production processes, environmental controls, and physical safety practices (e.g., working at height, electrical safety, confined space entry, PPE).
- Extensive experience in fire/life safety and industrial hygiene principles and practices.
- Exceptional communication, project management, statistical analysis, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong interpersonal, collaboration, and communication abilities with the ability to influence without direct authority.
- Ability to learn and utilize software applications for EHS management, online document collaboration, and virtual meetings.
- Ability to work independently in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
- Ability to respond promptly with clear and accurate information to a variety of stakeholders.
- Highly collaborative with a team-first mindset.
- Solid understanding of applicable consensus standards and federal, state, and local requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Applicable technical certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist).
- Ability to provide support for after-hours emergency response.
