Job Overview

We are seeking an exceptional and compassionate Special Education Teacher Assistant to join our team. As a Special Education Teacher Assistant, you will work closely with our Special Education Teachers to support the academic, behavioral, and health/hygiene needs of our students. This is an anticipated vacancy, and we are looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic individual who is passionate about working with students with specialized needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist Special Education Teachers in planning and implementing individualized education plans (IEPs) for students with specialized needs
  • Provide one-on-one support to students, helping them to achieve their academic and personal goals
  • Develop and implement strategies to support students with behavioral and emotional challenges
  • Collaborate with other education professionals, such as occupational therapists and speech therapists, to ensure a comprehensive approach to student support
  • Assist with daily living skills, such as feeding, toileting, and hygiene, as needed
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to stay up-to-date on best practices in special education
  • Maintain accurate records and reports on student progress, including IEP goals and objectives

Essential Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree in special education or a related field preferred
  • Experience working with students with specialized needs, either in a educational or care-giving setting
  • Knowledge of best practices for working with children and young adults with specialized needs, or the ability to obtain this knowledge through training and professional development
  • Ability to lift and move up to thirty pounds without assistance, or to assist with lifting and moving up to fifty pounds
  • Ability to hold a license with the Illinois State Board of Education within sixty working days of hire

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in special education or a related field
  • Experience working in an educational setting, preferably in a special education classroom
  • Knowledge of Illinois State Board of Education regulations and policies
  • Experience with assistive technology and adaptive equipment
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Patience, empathy, and understanding when working with students with specialized needs
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Google Suite
