Key Responsibilities

As a Sylvan Tutor, you will be the frontline of our student‑success engine. You’ll be expected to deliver high‑quality, individualized instruction while fostering a supportive, engaging learning atmosphere. Your core duties include:

  • Deliver customized tutoring sessions aligned with Sylvan’s proven curricula in reading, English, math, writing, study skills, or ACT/SAT test preparation.
  • Assess student baseline performance using diagnostic tools and create tailored learning plans that address specific strengths and growth areas.
  • Implement active learning strategies—such as guided practice, think‑aloud protocols, and real‑world problem solving—to boost comprehension and retention.
  • Motivate and inspire students by setting clear, achievable goals, celebrating milestones, and providing constructive feedback that builds confidence.
  • Track and document progress after each session in Sylvan’s learning management system, ensuring accurate reporting for parents and the Educational Team.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and staff, sharing insights about student performance, addressing concerns, and recommending next steps.
  • Maintain a safe, welcoming environment in the learning center, adhering to all health, safety, and confidentiality policies.
  • Participate in professional development workshops and team meetings to stay current on instructional best practices and Sylvan program updates.

Essential Qualifications

To succeed in this role, candidates must meet the following baseline requirements:

  • Reading/English tutors: Current enrollment in, or completion of, an Education or Teaching degree; or documented classroom observation/student‑teaching experience.
  • Math tutors: Demonstrated mastery of mathematics through Algebra II (or higher); no formal education degree required.
  • Test‑Prep tutors (ACT/SAT): Strong personal test scores (preferably 30+ on the ACT or 1400+ on the SAT) and a proven ability to explain test‑taking strategies.
  • General: Minimum of two years of tutoring or teaching experience (preferred but not mandatory).
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to build rapport quickly with learners of varying ages.
  • Location: Ability to work from either the Schaumburg or Lake Zurich/Barrington centers (or designated remote locations) and to travel within the assigned service area as needed.
  • Availability: Commitment to work at least one weekend day (Saturday or Sunday) and at least one weekday per week, with flexibility for additional summer hours.
